Malelene - A man accused of trying to murder an alleged poacher appeared in the Malelane Magistrate's Court on Monday, Mpumalanga police said.

Richard Hume, 31, would be back in court on February 26, Sergeant Gerald Sedibe said.

Hume, the son of rhino and buffalo breeder John Hume, was out on R5 000 bail.

In September, Sabelo Maphungla was driving a bakkie in the Mauricedale game reserve with Siso Nkhosi, 28, and Jabo Dlamini, 38.

Hume allegedly shot Maphungla, wounding him in the head. Nkhosi and Dlamini were charged with trespassing and illegal game hunting, but the matter was provisionally struck from the court roll in December, pending Maphungla's recovery.

Sedibe said the case had not yet been reinstated, because Maphungla remained in hospital.
