Polokwane - Five detainees have escaped from police holding cells in Polokwane, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.

They escaped sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, said Colonel Ronel Otto.

“At this stage it is not clear how the suspects managed to escape, but investigations into the circumstances behind the incident are ongoing,” she said.

The men have been identified as Mackford Mangena, Samuel Legodi, Edwin Maleka, Joseph Mathipa, and Sello Matlala. Three of them are 19 years old.

Mangena and Legodi faced accusations of armed robbery, Mathipa was accused of robbery, Matlala of rape, and Maleka of housebreaking and theft.

“Members of the public are advised not to apprehend the suspects as they might be armed and dangerous,” said Otto. - Sapa
