Durban - Five men aged between 25 and 35 were arrested after a failed robbery attempt in Greenwood Park in Durban north, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

Captain Thulani Zwane said police were patrolling on Effingham Road on Monday around 4.15am, when they noticed a Toyota Tazz with five occupants.

The vehicle was driving slowly with its headlights off. When the occupants saw the police van they sped off and a car chase ensued.

Police pulled the vehicle over and searched it. Two firearms with three rounds of ammunition and a knife were confiscated.

“Suspects were questioned by the police who then admitted to being on their way to commit a robbery at one of the service stations in Umhlanga Rocks Drive,” Zwane said. - Sapa
