Johannesburg - Five men linked to smash-and-grab robberies in Braamfontein have been arrested, the Johannesburg metro police department (JMPD) said on Wednesday.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the attacks happened on Tuesday along Solomon Street, and the five were arrested in the afternoon.

“The victims whose car windows got smashed all drove away because the JMPD officers (who chased after them) were not wearing uniforms and also drove unmarked cars,” said Minnaar.

“Public members also did not know that the men chasing the suspects were in fact officers who were under cover.”

Minnaar said the victims of Tuesday's attacks should urgently report to the Hillbrow police station.

“The suspects will be released if we do not get any statements from the victims,” said Minnaar.

No suspected stolen items had been recovered from the suspects.

Minnaar called on the public to report any suspicious individuals or smash-and-grab suspects by calling the JMPD control room on 011-375-5911.
