Johannesburg - A former national cricketer will appear on a charge of rape at an Eastern Cape court.

The man, who The Daily Dispatch said was a well-known cricketer who played for the South African national team and took part in the 1992 Cricket World Cup, is alleged to have raped a woman on Saturday evening after leaving a party in Cintsa.

The woman opened a case of rape on Sunday at the Gonubie police station in East London.

According to the Daily Dispatch, the man denied raping the woman and denied being informed about the accusation.

The newspaper reports the cricketer had spent the weekend with the complainant and a group of people to celebrate a birthday.
