Durban - Four brazen criminals made off with an unconfirmed R400 000 of pension payout money outside the Durban North Hyper on Sunday morning.

Security company G4S had been delivering money meant for pension payouts when the thugs pounced, holding one security guard at gunpoint while his colleague remained in the driver’s seat.

Police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane, said no arrests had been made.

Kevin Govender, G4S operations director, would not comment on the details of the robbery.

“Our guys were questioned by the police and no one was injured during the robbery. The matter has since been handed over to the Hawks for further investigation,” said Govender. He could not confirm the amount of money stolen during the heist.

“When we receive money bags, they are sealed so we are in no position to know how much is being transported at any given time,” he said.

Haden Searles, Durban North CPF chairman said it would seem the guards were caught off-guard, but questioned the timing of the robbery. “How did these guys know that on that Sunday morning a huge amount of money would be transported to Pick n Pay?

“The precision with which they pulled this off... these guys worked on inside information,” said Searles.

He said the growing number of incidents involving high-powered weapons was alarming.

Kobus Kuyler, spokesman for Pick n Pay, said they were happy that no one was injured in the robbery.

“No one was injured and where appropriate Pick n Pay is co-operating with the police, and the security firm that was robbed,” Kuyler said.
