Cape Town -

A 10-year-old girl was killed and four other people were wounded when they were caught in the crossfire of a suspected gang shoot-out in Mfuleni.

Jamie-Lee Witbooi died at the scene and three men and a woman were taken to hospital after they were hit by bullets in Kasba Street in Wesbank, Mfuleni.

Provincial police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut said the incident had occurred at about 6.20pm on Sunday.

Unidentified suspects had randomly opened fire in Kasba Street, he said. A motive for the shooting had not been established and the circumstances were being investigated.

No arrests had been made.

When the Cape Argus visited the area on Monday, neighbours said the girl had been visiting her family and was not from the area.

The door to the home which the girl had been visiting had blood on it.

No one was home and neighbours said that the residents had moved yesterday soon after the shooting.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said she could not name the gangs involved in the shoot-out and that there had been “a lot of shootings” in Kasba Street.

“The worst part of it is that we have children who want to play in the park, here in Kasba, but now our children are stuck indoors,” she said.
