Mbombela - Mpumalanga Hawks boss Maj-Gen Simon Mapiane will go on trial on Thursday for allegedly falsifying travel claims.

Mapiane, who was in charge of the investigation into alleged fraud and corruption implicating Kaizer Chiefs boss Bobby Motaung, was arrested on May 22 last year, a Sapa correspondent reported.

When he appeared in the Nelspruit Regional Court last year, the court heard Mapiane still had to make representations before the start of his trial. The trial was initially scheduled to start on September 25 before being postponed to November 27 and subsequently to February 13, 2014.

He had not been asked to plead to the charges and was out on R1000 bail.

Previously, provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Thulani Ntobela denied rumours of a fall-out between him and Mapiane that led to Mapiane taking over investigations into Motaung's case after there had been little progress since 2007.
