The entrance into Eldorado Park on the Golden Highway, south of Joburg, briefly resembled something out of a movie on Monday.

There was a high-speed chase, guns and a host of police vehicles as well as officers hanging out of the windows of speeding cars.

More than 12 police vehicles chased cash-in-transit robbery suspects from Eldorado Park to Freedom Park.

The chase ended in neighbouring Devland.

The scene at the corner of Piston and East streets in Devland was swamped with police officers and curious onlookers.

Everything had started at around 9am on Monday after a security guard collecting money at a shopping complex in Eldorado Park was confronted by two robbers while returning to the cash van.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the guard had been pointed at with a firearm and the robbers took a cash box before fleeing into a getaway vehicle, a grey Chrysler Neon with two occupants.

The guard driving the cash van followed the robbers into open veld, where they abandoned the car and fled the scene on foot.

The robbers dropped a cash box that had exploded and fled in different directions.

By this time, several police vehicles were in the area.

Dlamini said two pistols had been recovered.

The suspects were followed into a nearby dumpsite, where four were arrested, while another was shot dead.

Dlamini said the four suspects would appear at the Protea Magistrate’s Court soon.
