Johannesburg - A car wash employee died after he was shot in Dube, Soweto on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

The 22-year-old man tried to stop a hijacker but was shot in the chest, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

A man walked into a car wash and talked to an employee who was carrying car keys.

The hijacker took the keys for a VW Polo from the worker and pushed him into a car he was washing.

The worker then tried to stop the man driving off in the Polo but the hijacker shot him before speeding away in the vehicle.

“The man was rushed to the nearest clinic but he died on arrival,” Makhubela said.

The car was recovered in White City but the hijacker was still at large.
