Johannesburg - A father and son were shot and wounded by two hijackers in Boksburg on the East Rand on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

The attackers were arrested with the help of residents and an Ekurhuleni metro police officer, Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said.

The hijackers - driving a silver grey VW polo - stopped behind the father's silver grey Nissan Qashqai.

The man sitting in the passenger seat jumped out of the car and shot the father in the chest.

His son, a schoolboy, went after the hijacker and was shot in his right upper leg.

He managed to keep the hijacker from running away.

Residents who heard the shot came to help.

“An Ekurhuleni metro police officer arrived on the scene and assisted in arresting the two suspects,” Mogale said.

Police recovered a firearm during the arrest.

One of the hijackers sustained minor injuries and was transported to hospital.
