Pretoria - “I have the cure for Aids,” proclaimed arson-accused Maletswai Albert Maditsi before he was denied bail and ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation.
The Pretoria man, who allegedly set off an explosion at the Department of Health’s head office, appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday and faces a charge of arson. A district surgeon evaluated Maditsi before his appearance and concluded that he needed to be admitted to Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital for further assessment.
The matter was postponed to August 4 pending observation.
Magistrate Adriaan Bekker asked the accused if he wanted a State representative or if he would be representing himself. Maditsi said: “I don’t need a representative because I want to address the court and tell them why I did what I did right now.”
Unconcerned with the legal process, Maditsi was eager to explain himself and his actions to magistrate Adriaan Bekker, who dismissed the notion, telling him he would do so later.
