One of the robbers who was beaten up by students at the University of Limpopo's Mankweng campus on Thursday has died, police said.
The 24-year-old was identified as Lekau Epraim Mamabolo, said Constable Moses Molepo.
He said eight robbers stole a cellphone from a student earlier in the day. About 100 students chased them, caught five of them and beat them with sticks, stones and other weapons.
Three robbers escaped and were later arrested off the campus.
The other five were taken to hospital under police guard. Mamabolo died in hospital.
Molepo said no arrests had yet been made. A case of malicious injury to property and murder had been opened. - Sapa
