Bethlehem, Free State - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate on Monday was investigating a case of an officer committing suicide in custody.

The officer, accused of rape, hung himself on Saturday afternoon in a holding cell where he was kept alone, said spokesman Moses Dlamini in a statement.

“The evidence found at the scene suggests that the deceased hanged himself using shoe laces.”

The officer had apparently raped his ex-girlfriend in the early hours of Saturday morning and was arrested the same day.
