Tzaneen -

A rapist was jailed for life by the Tzaneen Regional Court on Tuesday, Limpopo police said.

Matome Jeffrey Rabothatha was found guilty of raping three women in Tzaneen in 2006 and 2007, Colonel Ronel Otto said.

He received a life sentence for the rape of a 19-year-old woman in August 2006.

Rabothatha hit the woman on her head with a bottle and threw her down an embankment.

For raping an 18-year-old woman in June 2007, he was given a 10-year jail term.

In the same month, he threatened a 19-year-old woman with a knife and raped her twice. He was sentenced to another 10 years' imprisonment for this crime.

Limpopo police commissioner Lt-Gen Simon Mpembe welcomed the sentences and commended the bravery of the women for reporting the crimes to police.

He also thanked the police officers involved for their work in removing Rabothatha from the community. - Sapa
