Pretoria -

Shoppers at the Centre Walk Mall were shocked on Tuesday when they saw a man shot dead in an apparent fit of jealous rage.

The mall in the CBD was closed for five hours as crime scene investigators gathered evidence in the murder of Nigerian national Goodwill Prosper Emmanuel.

“It was crazy, two men running after each other and shots going off. We didn’t know where to run for cover,” one witness said.

Police spokeswoman Sergeant Ann Poortman said a lovers’ quarrel between the two men had started at Central House Office Block in Thabo Sehume (formerly Andries) Street, which led to Emmanuel’s death at a small restaurant at the mall. He was shot in the head.

“The victim had been at his place of work when his partner arrived. A quarrel ensued. The victim fled into the mall. When he entered the mall the suspect fired and hit him in the back. He gave chase and shot at him three more times.”

Poortman said the chase ended in the restaurant when Emmanuel’s partner cornered him, shot him at close range in the head and then tried to run away.

“Shoppers chased the suspect, apprehended him and handed him over to police.

All mall entrances were closed off. Crowds of onlookers gathered. The suspect will face a murder charge in court soon.
