Johannesburg - The Free State male nurse accused of raping a terminally ill cancer patient appears in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Michael Moema, 33, allegedly raped Magda Lombard during a night shift at the National Hospital in Bloemfontein on October 15. Lombard died a month later.

In an affidavit made before she died, Lombard alleged that another nurse held her down while Moema sexually assaulted her.

At the time of the assault, Lombard had been paralysed from the waist down for over a year.

She told Captain Francois Laux that although she could not physically feel the sexual assault, she could see what was happening, and identified Moema from a number of photographs shown to her.

Laux received Lombard's statement two days after the attack.

Moema is out on bail. - Sapa
