Durban - A jealous husband allegedly killed a Grade 11 pupil and shot and wounded his wife at their home in Amanzimtoti on Tuesday night.

The man, also a teacher at a south coast school, allegedly carried out the shootings in front of his children, aged five and eight.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the man was arrested and had been charged with murder and attempted murder. “When police arrived the man was still in the house. He handed himself over and admitted to shooting both people.”

“The wife was shot in her thighs. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage,” he said.

A police source, claimed the shooting was as a result of a love triangle and said neighbours heard gunshots followed by screams at 6.45pm.

The wife was taken to Kingsway Hospital and the two children were left in the care of a neighbour.

Cameron Jiraudeau of the Amanzimtoti Trauma Unit, an NGO that helps with trauma counselling, was at the scene with his wife Pat.

Jiraudeau said they were alerted by the police and were there to counsel the children.

“The kids were very traumatised when we spoke to them,” he said. The pupil’s body was removed from the property at about 10pm. - Daily News
