King William's Town - The around the clock investigation into the murder of Nongqongile Sololo, 77, of Centane, yielded positive results as investigators arrested a 26-year-old man on Friday, Eastern Cape police said.

The grandmother, who lived alone, was allegedly murdered by the suspect during the night of July 12 at her home at Rwatsini location, Gcina village, Centane, spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said on Sunday.

"The deceased suffered upper body injuries". The motive for the murder was not clear at this stage, he said.

Butterworth policing cluster commander Brigadier Trevor Mey expressed shock at the senseless murder of elderly people and vowed that those implicated in such cases would be brought to book to face the consequences of their deeds.

Non-stop investigations of such cases was in line with the back to basics policing approach which required efficient and responsive investigation of crime, using all available resources to ensure that offenders were brought to book, Mey said.

The suspect would appear in the Centane Magistrates' Court on Monday, Manatha said.
