A Mayville man has been arrested after he was found in possession of heroin valued at R130 000.

Members of the narcotics wing of the Durban Organised Crime Unit arrested the 30-year-old man in the Durban CBD on Wednesday afternoon after a month-long surveillance operation, said provincial police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker.

Naicker said police seized a package containing 440 individually packed plastic packets, each containing a single dose of heroin.

“The suspect was placed under arrest and a search of his Mayville flat resulted in a further 200 grams of powdered heroin being recovered,” he said.

He was expected to appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Naicker said undercover police and crime intelligence operatives were being deployed in various parts of the province and are working with the aid of informer networks.

He said they had already had a number of successes.

“The most recent successes were at Umzinto on the South Coast where nine accused appeared in court on 19 counts of dealing in drugs,” Naicker said. - Daily news
