Johannesburg - A man was found guilty in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court of animal abuse on Friday, the NPSCA said.

The court sentenced Christopher Dennis Maile, 45, to a fine of R3000 or six months imprisonment, with a further six months imprisonment suspended for five years, National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) senior inspector Jaco Pieterse said in a statement.

Maile was also declared unfit to own or be in possession of any animal for five years.

Pieterse said he laid charges of animal cruelty against Maile in 2011 after a female Boerboel-cross dog was found with severe vaginal prolapse the size of a soccer ball.

“No medical treatment was provided and the animal was left to suffer in agony for more than 10 days,” said Pieterse.

“The state fails to understand why the accused did not seek assistance for the dog,” prosecutor Lourain Kgaditsi said during the court proceedings.
