Lydenburg - A 34-year old man is in police custody after allegedly murdering his ex-girlfriend's mother at a farm outside Lydenburg, Mpumalanga police said on Thursday.

Police spokesman Selvy Mohlala said the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident in the early hours of Wednesday morning. “Information at police's disposal reveals that the suspect was allegedly served with a protection order which was obtained by his ex-girlfriend against him last week,” Mohlala said.

“While the 51-year-old victim, the mother of his girlfriend, was on her way to work, the suspect attacked, strangled and fatally beat her with a pick handle.”

The suspect then allegedly took the victim's cellphone, called his ex-girlfriend, and told her her mother was dead and that she was next.

“Police were summoned to the scene and found the lifeless body of the woman lying on the road. A manhunt for the suspect was then launched and he was nabbed shortly afterwards while hitch-hiking to Lydenburg.”

The suspect was expected to appear in the Lydenburg Magistrate's Court on Friday on a charge of murder.
