Durban - A man has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and killing his 17-year-old girlfriend in Phoenix, outside Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

On Monday, the mother of the teenager returned to her home in Woodview, Phoenix, around 5.30pm to discover that the gate to the house was open and signs that blood had been cleaned up with a mop, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

The woman could not find her daughter and reported a case of kidnapping to police.

On Wednesday, the teenager's 21-year-old boyfriend was arrested in connection with the crime and led police to her body in a nearby cane field.

“He also revealed that he fatally assaulted the deceased in the house and dumped her body in the sugarcane field,” Zwane said.

The man would appear in the Verulam Magistrate's Court soon to face charges of kidnapping and murder.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the Phoenix police for the speedy arrest of the man. - Sapa
