Durban - A man accused of raping and murdering a teenaged girl was arrested on Thursday in Ingwavuma, KwaZulu-Natal, police said.

Captain Thulani Zwane said the man was found hiding at his uncle's homestead.

The man approached the 13-year-old girl while she was walking home in the Jozini area last Tuesday.

“It is alleged that the suspect proposed love to her but she refused,” Zwane said.

“The suspect grabbed her and allegedly raped her before killing her in the bushes.”

The girl was reported missing when she did not return home. Police and residents searched the area on Monday and found the girl's decomposed body in the bushes.

Zwane said the man had been charged with murder and rape and would appear in the Ubombo Magistrate's Court soon. - Sapa
