Nkomazi, Mpumalanga -

A Mpumalanga man appeared in the Nkomazi Magistrate's Court on Friday in connection with a toddler's death arising from an illegal electricity connection, police said.

Vasco Vincent Mhlongo, 48, was charged with murder, Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

He was released on a warning and would be back in court on August 16.

Hlathi said on January 18, 2011, at Block B in Tonga, a two-year-old boy was fatally electrocuted when he touched an open electrical cable in an illegal connection.

“These connections were between the houses in the area, so the baby was playing with other children when he touched uncovered cables.”

Investigations pointed to Mhlongo as the one who connected the cables.

“An inquest was opened and the docket was send to director of public prosecutions for a decision.”

The conclusion was that Mhlongo should be charged for murder. - Sapa
