Ventersdorp - A 52-year-old farm worker has been killed in Ventersdorp, North West police said on Wednesday.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said farmer Wilhelmina Du Toit called police on Sunday to report that a “badly” beaten Frans Modisa had been found in a pigsty on Klippan farm.

“The victim was seriously hurt, with severe head and arm injuries. He was unable to speak.” He died on Monday at the hospital.

Ngubane declined to respond to a claim by the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) in the province that the worker's death was a “racial killing”.

Finger pointing would not help, he said.

“Police would like to call on anyone who has information on the murder of Mr Frans Modisa (to come forward), as finger pointing and malicious rumour-mongering will not assist in this investigation.”

Ngubane said Du Toit reported another case of theft when she informed police that her pig was stolen, and she knew who had stolen it.

“She showed police the tracks of the wheel-barrow leading to the suspects' house from (her) pigsty,” he said.

Two men, Elias Motshwaiwa, 23, and Paul Moloto, 21, were arrested after they were found in possession of a pig carcass.

He said they appeared in Ventersdorp Magistrate's Court on Tuesday and were denied bail, while police did further investigations.

They would be back in court on July 9 facing charges of stock theft. - Sapa
