Cape Town - A mother has been left heartbroken after her son was shot dead in a drive-by shooting in Rocklands while he was visiting a friend’s home on Sunday.

Wade van Nelson, 23, left home the night before to play a game of “dice” (gambling) with a friend.

The two were outside at 7am in Vink Street when shots rang out from a passing car. Van Nelson died on the scene.

His mother, Verona van Nelson, 45, who was a few streets away in the family home, rushed to his side, but he died in front of her.

She said she was in a state of shock and still felt helpless.

“When they woke me up and I heard what had happened, I immediately got in the bakkie to go to the house.

“When I saw him lying there, the first thing I wanted to do was lift him up and take him to the hospital, but it was too late.

“There were nine shots and eight had hit him. The two that hit him in the chest killed him.

“It was very hard seeing him like that, I tried talking to him but he couldn’t respond. All I could do was stop the bleeding with some towels.”

Witnesses described two men in a “greenish/bluish” Fiat Uno with their faces hidden under hoodies. The one in the passenger seat was the shooter.

“There are people that can identify them, because they robbed people in Strandfontein half an hour before. Those people that were robbed can identify them.”

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said the reason for the shooting was not yet known.

“It is alleged that unknown suspects fired several shots at him. A murder case was opened for investigation and no arrests have been made yet
