Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal - A man was stoned to death by residents after he burned down his mother's home in Elandskop outside of Pietermaritzburg, the Witness reported on Monday.

Nhlanhla Dlamini's family believed he was possessed by evil spirits after he tried to stab his mother with a knife some time ago. After Dlamini tried to stab his mother his family got a protection order against him and sent him away.

According to the Witness, the 46-year-old man showed up at his family home on Saturday without an invitation while they were having a tombstone unveiling ceremony.

“He came here yesterday (Saturday) and burnt down three huts,” said a relative who spoke to the Witness on condition of anonymity.

After burning down the huts he was taken from the family's property and stoned to death by angry residents.

The newspaper said it could not reach police for a comment.
