Durban - A hostage drama was playing out in Shongweni on Wednesday morning after an armed man kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and took her to his homestead.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said it appeared as if the woman had been shot in the leg. He said her condition was unclear.

Negotiations between the kidnapper and the police had been ongoing since 8am.

Evidently the woman was walking to work when the ex-boyfriend held her at gunpoint.

The man dragged her to his house in Ma Gelekehle Road, a semi-rural settlement in Shongweni.

He warned police if they approached the house he would shoot, Zwane said.

The house had been surrounded by more than 50 police and task team members.

A neighbour, Petros Ntinga, described the man as a “pleasant guy”. He was shocked about what was happening and hoped the situation would be resolved peacefully.

Another resident said the man had fired shots in the air while dragging the victim to his house.
