Johannesburg - A Johannesburg metro police department officer was arrested on Friday for corruption, metro police said.

“A corrupt JMPD officer in his late 20s was today (Friday) arrested by members of the internal affairs unit of JMPD which investigates corrupt officers,” said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

“The incident, at about 10am, involved the corrupt officer stopping a driver for speeding at 104km/h in a 60 km/h zone along Coma Road in Soweto.”

The officer told the woman driver of the car that she would be arrested unless she “made another plan”.

The woman then went to an ATM and drew R900, and gave the officer R700 after returning to her car.

She then reported the officer to internal affairs.

“The officer was arrested and is currently detained at Moroka police station,” said Minnaar.

He would appear at the Protea Magistrate's Court on Monday for bribery and corruption.

Minnaar said the JMPD would never condone corruption and urged the public to report corrupt officers by calling 0800-002-587 or sending an sms to 32840. - Sapa
