Johannesburg - The trial of a man accused of killing honeymoon tourist Anni Dewani was expected to continue in the Western Cape High Court on Thursday.

During proceedings on Wednesday, the court was told that Mziwamadoda Qwabe, who was serving 25 years in jail for his role in the murder, was friends with Xolile Mngeni.

Mngeni's lawyer, Qalisile Dayimani had previously told the court his client would deny ever being friends with Qwabe.

“I've seen them now and then. I've seen them together,” Mngeni's friend told the court. The friend, 26, who may not be identified, said Mngeni often used his cellphone and had added Qwabe's cellphone number to his contacts list.

“When Mngeni lost his phone, he wanted to be in touch with this person and used my phone.”

Dewani was killed in Gugulethu on November 13, 2010, in an apparent hijacking while on honeymoon with her husband Shrien, the crime's alleged mastermind.

Mngeni has pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. - Sapa
