Johannesburg - North West premier Thandi Modise on Friday condemned the shooting at a provincial government department where two employees were killed.

“We wish to condemn in the strongest terms... violence in the workplace which has left us numb with shock and [we] convey our condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the tragic incident,” she said in a statement.

The shooting happened on Thursday at a building in Mmabatho, which houses several departments.

North West police said three other people were seriously hurt.

Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said a man entered the building and fired shots inside the offices of the human settlements department.

Two people were wounded by ricocheting bullets. The third victim suffered head injuries after being struck with a gun.

The shooter's motive was not immediately clear. The victims were taken to a nearby hospital.

Modise wished them a speedy recovery.

Human settlements spokesman Ben Bole said the man was an official at the department.

The department would also conduct its own internal investigation. - Sapa
