Pretoria - Controversial prisoner Christoff Becker, one of the Waterkloof Four, is in trouble with prison authorities yet again – he has allegedly been caught in possession of a cellphone at the Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria.
He could spend longer in jail.
“As part of our zero tolerance, being found in possession of a cellphone and other contraband will definitely result in internal disciplinary processes that may be followed by a range of penalties, including downgrading of his (Becker’s) status and withdrawal of privileges,” said Correctional Services spokesman Manelisi Wolela.
He said the cellphone was discovered during an impromptu search on Saturday.
“We always conduct searches in all our centres at unannounced times and are able to net significant contraband, including cellphones, drugs and home-made weapons such as knives.”
Becker, Frikkie du Preez, Gert van Schalkwyk and Reinach Tiedt were sentenced to 12 years in prison each for assaulting and killing an unidentified man in Moreleta Park.
They were released on parole in February, but Becker and Du Preez were sent back to jail after a cellphone video emerged showing them having a party in a cell shortly before they were released. They will serve at least another year at the Kgosi Mampuru prison.
Wolela said the investigation into this incident had been concluded and four officials alleged to have been responsible were facing disciplinary proceedings. Details would be disclosed only after these were completed.
