Cape Town - Plea negotiations between the State and a man accused of strangling his girlfriend have reached a deadlock.

On Thursday, Clive Bailey appeared in the Cape Town Regional Court in connection with the murder of Annchen Ferreira, 31, a nutritionist.

The couple had been in a relationship, on and off, for six months, before she was found dead on May 26 last year. It is alleged she was strangled during an argument with Bailey at a flat in Paddock Place in Milnerton Ridge.

Bailey handed himself over to the police upon hearing about Ferreira’s death.

State prosecutor Vuyani Nati said plea negotiations seemed to have reached a deadlock. John Riley, for Bailey, disagreed, saying there was a possibility the matter could be resolved.

He requested a postponement.

Magistrate Wilma van der Merwe postponed the matter to September 18.

The investigating officer had testified during Bailey’s bail application, saying Ferreira had tried to break off the relationship several times.
