johannesburg - The United States embassy in South Africa Monday named a consulate worker who was stabbed to death in Johannesburg over the weekend as an information management officer.

“The US Embassy confirms the death of Consulate General Johannesburg employee Christopher 'Norm' Bates,” the mission said in a statement.

Police said a 29-year-old South African woman has been arrested for allegedly stabbing Bates to death in the early hours of Sunday.

A security guard at an upmarket housing complex allegedly found her with a bloodied knife next to Bates, who had several wounds in the upper body.

The 41-year-old American had worked as an information management officer at the Johannesburg consulate from 2010.

He previously served in Senegal, Kenya and Lesotho during his 11-year career with the US State Department, the mission said. - Sapa-AFP
