Nine KwaZulu-Natal men were arrested on Monday for allegedly killing two foreigners and assaulting others in Mpumelelo, Pietermaritzburg, police said.

Captain Thulani Zwane said Ali Mkhuluziza, 41, a Burundian national, and seven friends were returning home when their vehicle broke down on Sunday.

They were approached by an unknown man, who threatened them before leaving.

He later returned with a group of other men carrying knives, sticks and stones. They damaged the car before assaulting the Burundian and his friends.

“Mkhuluziza ran towards a nearby house for assistance, but collapsed and died,” said Zwane.

The body of one of his friends, Aiwalie Saineti, 29, was found next to a nearby river. He is believed to have been a Malawian citizen.

Four others were treated in a local hospital.

Zwane said the nine men were arrested on Monday morning, following information supplied by the survivors of the attack.

They would appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court soon on charges of murder, assault, attempted murder and malicious damage to property. - Sapa
