Cape Town - A Cape Town police officer is fighting for his life after he was shot in his driveway while sitting inside his vehicle with his pregnant wife.

The police officer only identified as Constable “Oom G” Malakhizi, was off duty when he and his wife pulled into their driveway in N2 Gateway, Delft on Thursday night.

Police sources say the two suspects, one short and the other tall, ran to the car and shot Malakhizi in the stomach and fled the scene.

The motive of the attack is unclear, as nothing was taken from the couple.

Malakhizi is currently in a critical condition at Bellville Melomed Hospital.

He is stationed at Delft Police Station.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut confirms the shooting: “This office can confirm that a 35-year-old off-duty police constable was shot and wounded in Delft last night after he was attacked by two male suspects.
