Durban - A police constable who is alleged to have mistakenly shot his girlfriend while comparing his firearm to one in a soap opera appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Constable Siboniso Mkhize, 29, was remanded until next week.

Mkhize, of the Loop Street police station, went to visit his girlfriend, Lindsay Draai, in Berg Street on Friday, and while they were watching Generations, one of the characters demanded a gun from another. Mkhize wanted to see if the gun was the same as his and pulled out his service pistol. He then pulled the trigger by accident, the court heard.

Draai, who was shot in the stomach, died. She would have turned 25 on Sunday.
