One dead in Soweto shootout

Johannesburg – At least one person was killed following a shooting incident in Orlando West, Soweto in the early hours of Monday morning.

According to Gauteng police, the incident took place at a makeshift taxi rank on Khumalo street at 4.45am.

Police spokesperson Captain Nomvula Mbense explained that the incident was between two taxi associations.

“A shooting incident took place between the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (Wata) and Nancefield Dube West Taxi Association (Nanduwe) taxi associations,” she said.

“A 48-year-old male from the Wata taxi association was shot dead as a result while another person injured and rushed to hospital.”

Mbense said the suspects remain unknown and that no arrests have been made at this stage.

She however, confirmed that a case of murder and attempted murder has been opened.

It remains unclear why the shootout took place.
