Drugs, initially thought to be heroin, found during a raid on a drugs lab in Kloof this week, were being analysed, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Saturday.
“We are still waiting for a final say from the experts as to what type of drugs were found,” Captain Thulani Zwane said.
The drugs were discovered during a raid in the elite suburb of Kloof, near Durban, on Tuesday night.
Three men, aged 23, 55 and 56, arrested at the scene have appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court. They are expected back in court on July 8.
On Wednesday, national police commissioner Riah Phiyega said it was the biggest drug laboratory ever found in the country.
Approximately 10 000kg of drugs were recovered. At the time, Phiyega estimated the value of the haul at R3 billion.
On Saturday, The Witness reported that the drugs found in the bust were identified as methaqualone, the base ingredient of Mandrax, rather than heroin. - Sapa
