Johannesburg - A nurse accused of raping a dying, paralysed cancer patient in the National Hospital in Bloemfontein will appear in the city's high court on Friday.

Kodisang Moema, 34, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape.

Clinical pathologist Adri Krieger testified on Wednesday that the 50-year-old patient had been paralysed in the lower part of her body for about a year when the alleged rape took place.

Krieger said the woman's injuries were difficult to identify and describe, and that while she could not positively identify them as rape-related, she could not exclude a possible rape.

The woman had told her that although she had no feeling in the lower part of her body, she had known what was happening on the night of the alleged rape, and had seen what was going on by the light in a passage.

Moema was arrested after the woman, who has since died, alleged that she was raped at night in a ward at the National Hospital in Bloemfontein.

The woman's husband told the police the attack happened on October 15.

The woman could not identify the woman nurse she claimed held her down during the rape.
