Johannesburg - Shots were fired at Carnival Mall in Brakpan, east of Johannesburg, during a cash-in-transit robbery on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

“They (the robbers) fled the scene in the Polo, taking 10 containers with an undisclosed amount of cash,” Captain Joep Joubert said in a statement.

This happened when the security officers parked a cash van behind the Dischem to load money.

“Four security officers went inside and the driver stayed in the vehicle. A flashing light in the vehicle warned the driver that the back door of the vehicle was being tampered with,” Joubert said.

“He got out of the vehicle and saw a white VW Polo stopped behind him.”

Two men were allegedly taking money out of the vehicle. The driver fired several shots at the men, who sped off. A third man ran away.

No arrests had been made and no-one was injured.
