Johannesburg - A robbery has been reported at the Holiday Inn in Sandton, Johannesburg, a hotel employee said on Tuesday.

Marketing director Darryl Erasmus said a guest opened a case of theft after claiming a substantial amount of cash was taken from his room.

“We regret that such an incident has allegedly taken place and (we) are co-operating with the SA Police Service who are currently investigating the matter,” the hotel's management said in a statement on Tuesday.

“We are doing everything in our power to ensure that the affected guest is being treated fairly and within his rights.

“The matter is now a criminal case and Holiday Inn Sandton is unable to comment further, or at least until the due process of the law has been undertaken.”

Police spokesman Colonel Lungelo Dlamini declined to comment.

“We will not comment on it. We do not comment on court cases.”

Earlier, Eyewitness News reported that a porter at the hotel appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Tuesday in connection with the crime after he was found in possession of 5000 euros.

The guest, a prominent Jordanian banker, claimed that over R2 million (180 000 in euros and R300 000 in cash) was stolen. - Sapa
