Cape Town - Four men were arrested on Friday after an attempted armed robbery at a pie shop in Woodstock, Cape Town police said.

Warrant Officer November Filander said the men were spotted acting suspiciously outside the shop, on the corner of Victoria road and Roodebloem street.

When a police patrol approached the men, one of them fired several shots. Officers returned fire, wounding one of the men.

Two of the men were arrested outside. The other two were found hiding in the shop and also arrested.

A 9mm pistol was confiscated. A white VW Golf, believed to be the getaway vehicle, was left at the scene.

No money was taken from the shop and no officers or bystanders were wounded.

The gang would be charged with attempted armed robbery, attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

They would appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Monday. - Sapa
