Johannesburg – The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) on Wednesday said it welcomed the Gauteng High Court ruling directing the City of Johannesburg to upgrade the Slovo Park informal settlement.

Sanco national spokesperson Jabu Mahlangu said he was delighted at the ruling which was made on Tuesday.

“It highlights the importance of municipalities to be responsive to the developmental needs of communities in order to address the inherited housing backlog,” he said.

Mahlangu said the ruling “should give impetus to housing delivery and accelerate implementation of the informal settlement upgrade programme”.

He appealed to Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements Paul Mashatile to “expedite approval of funding for a housing project in the area”.

He said the ruling “has paved the way for the dignity of the homeless to be restored through vibrant sustainable human settlements to overcome the legacy of deprivation and apartheid spatial planning”.
