KwaZulu-Natal - A second suspect appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court yesterday after the murder of a Hibiscus Coast councillor and his friend a month ago.

The Port Shepstone Organised Crime Unit on Tuesday arrested the accused, Kwanele Cedric Hlongwa, 40, in Umlazi.

He faces two charges of murder and one of the possession of an unlicensed firearm. He was remanded in custody until September 5, for a bail application.

Councillor Wandile Mkhize, 34, was shot dead in a drive-by shooting outside his home in Manaba, near Margate, as he was walking with a fellow councillor and friend Nhlakanipho Shabane.

A hail of bullets was fired, killing Mkhize instantly.

Shabane died later in hospital.

Provincial police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said the accused was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, commended the detectives on the breakthrough.

“We had every confidence in the investigation team led by Lieutenant Colonel Nyuswa and they have not let us down,” she said.

Dumisani Skhakhane, 33, who is accused of conspiring to murder Mkhize, appeared in the Ramsgate Regional Court on August 21. He is due back in court on September 5. - Daily News
