Six men were arrested in Uitenhage for theft when they tried to sell 227kg of scrap metal, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

“Uitenhage police received a tip-off that these men allegedly stole the metal - cast iron railings - from the Jubilee cemetery in Kamesh,” Lt-Col Priscilla Naidu said.

The estimated value of the metal was about R2000.

The men, who were arrested on Wednesday, were expected to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate's Court on Friday on theft charges.

In a separate case, a 13-year-old boy was arrested early on Friday morning for allegedly breaking into a shop in Uitenhage.

“It is alleged that the teenager gained access to a shop in Market Street by entering through the roof. Police found him walking at about 2am with five cartons of cigarettes, to the value of R1200,” Naidu said.

The teenager would appear in court soon on a charge of housebreaking. - Sapa
