Port Elizabeth - Seahorses with an estimated value of R100 000 were seized at a container deport in Deal Party near Port Elizabeth on Tuesday, Eastern Cape police said.

A 76-year-old Chinese woman was arrested for importing the seahorses without permission, for illegal possession of the fish, and for contravening the SA National Environmental Management Act, said Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu.

The one hundred and thirty two seahorses were found wrapped in a container, which was imported from Hong Kong, China.

The seahorses were found in plastic sauce bottle covers, jars of preserved vegetables and preserved ginger, and in Chinese steam baskets, said Gwavu.
