Johannesburg - A man was shot dead by police who were trying to retrieve a hijacked vehicle in Dobsonville, Soweto, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

The man was shot by the police flying squad on Tuesday night, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

“He was confirmed dead at the scene,” he said.

Two men hijacked a woman while she was pulling into her driveway in the area on Tuesday night.

Her seven-month-old baby was with her in the vehicle at the time of the hijacking.

“One of the men jumped into her vehicle and drove off with her and the baby,” said Makhubela.

She and the baby were then dropped off on the side of the road and the men drove off with her vehicle.

The woman reported the hijacking to police, and the flying squad was alerted.

Flying squad officers spotted the vehicle and gave chase.

“The men then opened fire at the police,” said Makhubela.

Police returned fire and one of the men was shot dead.

The other man was arrested and would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court soon.
