Johannesburg - Soweto motorists should avoid some roads in the evenings because of crime, Gauteng traffic police said on Thursday.

“Gauteng traffic police warn motorists and residents to avoid Rev Frederick Modise Drive in Meadowlands, Soweto highway between N17 or Klipvalley Road (Orlando or Mzimhlophe) and Hennesy Street or Sanders road, due to unrest in the area,” spokesman Obed Sibasa said.

Sibasa said motorists should be vigilant and avoid the roads between 7pm and 5am, or once it got dark.

Criminals put rubble and rocks on the streets, burnt tyres and robbed and hijacked motorists.

“There are also reports of looting in the area.”

Drivers were advised to use Klipvalley Road, or Mooki Street, or Main Reef Road and Elias Motsoaledi Road to different parts of Soweto, including Meadowlands, Dobsonville and Mzimhlophe.

Sibasa said police were monitoring the area.

“The situation is calm and peaceful at the moment, however, unsafe at night,” he said.
